Quick answer

Upload your file to Google Drive, set General access to Anyone with the link with the Viewer role, and copy the link. In DM Spark, add that link as a button on a Spark for your keyword. Before you post, open the link in a private window to check it opens without signing in.

Comment a keyword, get the file

You post a reel about your spring meal plan and say, “Comment PLAN and I'll send it to you.” Someone comments PLAN, and a DM arrives with a button that opens the PDF.

The same setup works for a recipe card, a workbook, a preset pack, or a price list, and for story replies and DMs as well as comments. You share a link to your file from wherever it's hosted, and DM Spark sends it as a button in the message.

Share a file from Google Drive

Google Drive works well for this.

  1. Upload your file to Google Drive

Give it a name people will recognize after they save it, like Spring meal plan.pdf.

  2. Share it with anyone who has the link

Open Share. Under General access, choose Anyone with the link, and set the role to Viewer.

  3. Copy the link

    Select Copy link, then Done.

  4. Add it to your Spark as a link button

In DM Spark, create a Spark for your keyword. Under Links, choose Add link, write a short button label (up to 20 characters), and paste the Drive link.

  5. Open it while signed out

Paste the link into a private browser window. You should see your file, not a sign-in page or a request for access. Then comment your keyword from a second account and check that the DM arrives.

Anyone with the link lets people open the file without signing in to a Google account. If General access is set to Restricted, only people you've added can open it. Google explains both settings in Share files from Google Drive. The same page notes that your name and email are visible as the file's owner when you share a link, so upload from the Google account you use for your business if you'd rather keep your personal email private.

On Creator and Studio, when you paste a Drive link into a link button, DM Spark shows a Google Drive pill in the field. If the file isn't shared with anyone who has the link, the pill reads Not shared, so you can fix the setting in Drive before anyone taps the button.

Other places to host your file

Any link that opens without signing in will work, so use what you already have. Here's the setting to check in each.

  • DropboxSelect Share, choose Link for viewing, then Copy link. Anyone with a view-only link can preview the file without editing it (Dropbox Help).
  • OneDriveSelect Share, then Copy link. In the link settings, Anyone gives access to whoever has the link. A work or school account may not offer it if an admin has turned it off (Microsoft Support).
  • iCloud DriveIn the Files app, share the file, choose Anyone with the link, and let people view rather than edit (iPhone User Guide).
  • NotionSelect Share, open the Publish tab, and select Publish. Copy the link from the published page, not the page in your workspace (Notion Help).
  • CanvaSelect Share, set Access level to Anyone with the link, give view access, then Copy link (Canva Help).
  • Your own websiteUpload the file to your site, or put it on a page with a short intro and a download button. Link to that page and open it on your phone.
  • Gumroad, Stan, or ShopifyLink to the product page, free or paid, rather than the file. People check out and get the file the way your store normally delivers it.

Whichever you use, open the link in a private window before you post. If it asks you to sign in or request access, the sharing setting needs another look.

Tips before you post

  • Name the file clearlyPeople save it and look for it later. Spring meal plan.pdf is easier to find in their downloads than final_v3.pdf.
  • Keep PDFs lightPeople open your file from a DM, usually on their phone. Export images at screen size, and keep the file to what you promised in the post.
  • Plan for a post that takes offGoogle Drive may temporarily stop people viewing or downloading a file that gets a lot of views or downloads in a short time. Google says the restriction typically resets within 24 hours, and suggests dedicated hosting for large files such as ZIP archives (Download a file).
  • Use your own site for a big giveawayIf you expect a launch or giveaway to travel, a download page on your own website holds up better, and you can update it at the same address.
  • Ask for their email firstOn Creator and Studio, add Collect email to the Spark. DM Spark asks for their email, saves it to Contacts, and then sends the file. Say in your post that you'll ask. How to collect emails through DMs walks through it.

Copy you can adapt

This example is for a food creator sharing a meal plan. Swap in your own file and keyword.

Caption

“This week's spring meal plan has five dinners and one shopping list. Comment PLAN and I'll send it to you.”

DM

“Here's your spring meal plan! The shopping list is on the last page. Save it so it's handy on Sunday.”

Link button: Get the meal plan

If you ask for an email first

“Happy to send it! What's your email? Reply with it and I'll send the plan right here.”

Questions

Can I attach a PDF to the DM itself?

DM Spark sends your file as a link button. Put the file somewhere like Google Drive, share it with anyone who has the link, and paste that link into the button. People tap it and the file opens.

Do people need a Google account to open it?

No. With General access set to Anyone with the link, people can open the file without signing in.

Can I send more than one file?

Yes. A message can have up to three link buttons. In Google Drive you can also share a whole folder the same way you share a file.

Can I share a paid file?

Link to the product page in your store rather than the file itself, so people buy it before they download it.

Which plan do I need?

Sending a file link works on every plan, including Free. On Creator and Studio, DM Spark also checks that your Google Drive files are shared, and can ask for an email before sending the file.
