How to collect email addresses through Instagram DMs
A useful next step for people who ask about your business, with email capture and resource delivery.

Quick answer
Use an Instagram Spark sequence to ask for an email, save the reply to Contacts, and deliver a useful resource link by DM. For comment triggers, begin with a button tap or reply before the email question. Email capture is available on the Creator plan; it collects contact details without automatically subscribing someone to marketing.
Give interest a useful next step
Someone comments "interested" on your post. They want more information, so give them something useful: a first-visit checklist, an overview of your services, or a pricing sheet. An email-collection sequence saves their contact details alongside the request and sends the resource link in the conversation.
Choose a resource you already know people need. A photographer could share a session-preparation checklist; a studio could explain what to bring to the first class. These are examples you can adapt, rather than promises about how many leads a post will generate.
Build the sequence
Choose a useful resource and a clear keyword
Pick a checklist, service guide, or pricing sheet that answers a real question. Create a Spark for comments on the post and choose a keyword such as CHECKLIST. Explain the email request in the offer when contact details are required.
Start a sequence with a reply gate
Choose Sequence, available on the Creator plan. For a comment trigger, start with a confirmation message and button: Want the first-visit checklist? Tap below to continue. Label the button Send it. The recipient must tap or reply before you send the email question.
Ask for their email
Add Ask for their email. Explain the purpose and where the resource will arrive: What’s your email? I’ll save it with your checklist request, then send the link here in the DM. A valid email reply is saved to Contacts.
Deliver the resource in the DM
Add a message after the email step: Here’s your first-visit checklist. Hope it makes getting ready a little easier. Attach the resource as a link button. The address is collected; the resource is delivered through Instagram DM.
Test and check the saved contact
Go live and comment the keyword from a second account. Tap the opening button, submit a test email, and check that the link arrives and the capture appears in Contacts. Then test the resource link itself.
Message copy you can adapt
- Post offer: Comment CHECKLIST for the first-visit guide. We'll ask for your email to record your request, then send the link in the DM.
- Opening: Want the first-visit checklist? Tap below to continue. Button: Send it.
- Email question: What's your email? I'll save it with your checklist request, then send the link here in the DM.
- Delivery: Here's your first-visit checklist. Hope it makes getting ready a little easier. Button: Read the checklist.
Tell people what they will receive before asking for contact details. If an email serves no useful purpose for your offer, send the resource directly with a one-message comment Spark.
Where the email address goes
The email gate records the contact and the source of the capture. In DM Spark, new captures are saved without a marketing opt-in. If you connect Kit, each address is also added to Kit as a subscriber, so make the offer clear in the question you ask.
Keep the promise in the conversation accurate: the guide arrives in the Instagram DM. DM Spark doesn't send emails itself. If you connect Kit, each address is added to Kit as a subscriber.
See the contact and its context
Open Contacts to see captured emails and capture history. Search by email, name or username, filter by account or source Spark, and export a CSV. The capture history records the source Spark, which helps you understand what the person requested.
After the post runs, review captured-email totals and tracked link clicks on the Spark where available. A saved email and a resource click show different parts of the experience; neither proves someone booked or purchased.
Test the whole conversation
Use a second account because comments from your own connected account do not trigger the Spark. Check the opening button, email question, saved contact, and final link. The sequence still follows Instagram's messaging windows: an unanswered opening cannot receive another DM, and later messages must remain within the allowed response window.
For customers who mainly need prices, hours, or a booking link, a FAQ menu may be the more useful starting point.
Questions
Can I collect an email from an Instagram comment?
A comment starts the private conversation. After the person taps or replies to the opening DM, a sequence can ask for an email and save the response. The email is collected from the DM reply, not extracted from the comment or profile.
Will DM Spark email the resource to them?
No. The email step saves the address to Contacts. A following message sends the resource link through Instagram DM. To email them from Kit, connect Kit and each address is added there as a subscriber.
Does giving an email subscribe someone to my newsletter?
Not in DM Spark: the contact is saved without a marketing opt-in. If you connect Kit, every collected email is added to Kit as a subscriber, so say in your ask what people are signing up for, such as "Want my weekly newsletter?"
Can I export the contacts?
Yes. Contacts offers a CSV export and a Kit-ready CSV, both limited to 10,000 contacts. If you use Kit, you can connect it instead and skip the export.
Is the email address verified?
DM Spark checks the format of the reply. It does not verify mailbox ownership or guarantee that the mailbox exists.
Can I collect emails in a FAQ menu?
Use a separate sequence. FAQ menus support questions, answers, and links; they do not currently include email gates.
