Quick answer
To get fitness challenge signups from Instagram comments, connect your Instagram Business or Creator account to DM Spark, create a post-comment Spark for CHALLENGE, and send a message with a link button. Use your registration page; a DM link click alone does not register a participant.
When to use this automation
Use a challenge announcement reel to collect interest in a seven-day movement challenge. The comment starts the conversation; the registration page records the actual signup and explains what participants will receive.
- TriggerA keyword comment on the selected Instagram post or reel.
- KeywordCHALLENGE
- DeliveryUse your registration page; a DM link click alone does not register a participant.
How to set it up in DM Spark
Prepare the destination
Create a registration page with the start date, time zone, schedule, equipment, and whether the challenge is free or paid. Configure confirmation and participant updates in the platform that runs your challenge before publishing the announcement.
Connect Instagram and create a Spark
Sign in to DM Spark on the web and connect your Instagram Business or Creator account through Instagram’s login. From the dashboard, choose Create Spark, select the correct connected account, and give it a name that identifies the resource and campaign.
Choose the trigger and scope
Under When someone…, choose “comments on your posts”. Select only the post or reel promoting this resource. Leave Every post, including future posts off when other posts offer different resources.
Add CHALLENGE as the keyword
Add CHALLENGE in the keywords field. Choose With keywords rather than Every comment so unrelated replies do not receive this offer. Use the same word in your public invitation and avoid overlapping active keyword Sparks.
Write the DM and add the link button
Under Then, in their DMs, choose One message. Use this delivery text: “Here’s the signup page for the seven-day movement challenge. Register there to receive the schedule and joining details.” Add a link button labeled “Join the challenge” and paste your destination URL. Use your registration page; a DM link click alone does not register a participant. Check the message and button in the phone preview.
Save, go live, and test
Save the Spark and check that it is Live; if it is a draft or paused, choose Go live and complete any post selection. Complete a test registration from the DM link and confirm the challenge platform sends the expected joining details. Your own connected account’s comments do not trigger the Spark.
Publish the invitation and check results
Add the example invitation below to your caption and on-screen text once the test works. Review messages sent, people reached, and link clicks on the Spark. Use the destination platform’s reports to check outcomes beyond link clicks.
Caption and DM copy you can use
Adapt these examples to the resource you actually offer. Replace the example destination with your own tested URL in the link-button field.

What to check before promoting it
Keep one clear start date on the post, DM, and signup page. After registration closes, pause the Spark or change the message to explain the next intake. DM Spark does not run the challenge or send the daily workouts on your behalf.
Complete a test registration from the DM link and confirm the challenge platform sends the expected joining details.
Choose a simple delivery or an optional sequence
This walkthrough uses One message to deliver the requested link directly. Ask, then send is also available on Free if you want an opening button before the link. Each outgoing DM counts toward your allowance.
On the Creator plan, a sequence can add email capture or an eligible reminder. For comment triggers, the person must tap or reply before another DM can be sent; clicking a website link alone does not count as that reply. Later messages must stay within Instagram’s allowed messaging window. See the Spark setup guide and email capture guide before adding those steps.
Questions
Does commenting CHALLENGE sign someone up?
No. It requests the registration link. The person still needs to complete your signup process.
Can I measure completed signups in DM Spark?
DM Spark shows messages sent, people reached, and tracked link clicks. Confirm registrations in your challenge platform.
Can I set this up on DM Spark Free?
Yes. This setup uses One message, available on Free with 500 messages per calendar month and one connected account. The Creator plan adds custom sequences and email capture, with 25,000 included messages per billing period.
Why did my test not send a DM?
Check that the Spark is Live, Instagram is connected, the keyword is saved, and you have messages remaining. Use a new comment on a selected post from a second account; your own connected account’s comments do not trigger it. Check the Spark’s status for a connection or delivery issue before repeating the test.
