Quick answer

To build a course waitlist from Instagram comments, connect your Instagram Business or Creator account to DM Spark, create a post-comment Spark for WAITLIST, and send a message with a link button. Use your waitlist form; the course or email platform records the actual registration.

When to use this automation

A course teaser can show the lesson people will learn without opening enrollment yet. A WAITLIST Spark sends a signup page where interested viewers can request the launch information.

  • TriggerA keyword comment on the selected Instagram post or reel.
  • KeywordWAITLIST
  • DeliveryUse your waitlist form; the course or email platform records the actual registration.

How to set it up in DM Spark

  1. Prepare the destination

Create a waitlist page that names the course, intended student, expected launch timing, and what signup means. Configure the confirmation and launch communications in your own email or course platform. Avoid treating a keyword comment as enrollment.

  2. Connect Instagram and create a Spark

Sign in to DM Spark on the web and connect your Instagram Business or Creator account through Instagram’s login. From the dashboard, choose Create Spark, select the correct connected account, and give it a name that identifies the resource and campaign.

  3. Choose the trigger and scope

Under When someone…, choose “comments on your posts”. Select only the post or reel promoting this resource. Leave Every post, including future posts off when other posts offer different resources.

  4. Add WAITLIST as the keyword

Add WAITLIST in the keywords field. Choose With keywords rather than Every comment so unrelated replies do not receive this offer. Use the same word in your public invitation and avoid overlapping active keyword Sparks.

  5. Write the DM and add the link button

Under Then, in their DMs, choose One message. Use this delivery text: “Here’s the video-editing course waitlist. Join on this page if you’d like the launch information when enrollment opens.” Add a link button labeled “Join course waitlist” and paste your destination URL. Use your waitlist form; the course or email platform records the actual registration. Check the message and button in the phone preview.

  6. Save, go live, and test

Save the Spark and check that it is Live; if it is a draft or paused, choose Go live and complete any post selection. Submit a test signup from the DM and confirm it appears in your platform with the expected confirmation and course name. Your own connected account’s comments do not trigger the Spark.

  7. Publish the invitation and check results

Add the example invitation below to your caption and on-screen text once the test works. Review messages sent, people reached, and link clicks on the Spark. Use the destination platform’s reports to check outcomes beyond link clicks.

Caption and DM copy you can use

Adapt these examples to the resource you actually offer. Replace the example destination with your own tested URL in the link-button field.

  • Caption invitationComment WAITLIST for the signup page for my upcoming beginner video-editing course.
  • Automatic DMHere’s the video-editing course waitlist. Join on this page if you’d like the launch information when enrollment opens.
  • Link button labelJoin course waitlist

What to check before promoting it

Keep waitlist and enrollment messages distinct. When the course opens, update the destination and copy together or create a new enrollment Spark for the launch post. Do not keep promising early access after the enrollment deadline has passed.

Submit a test signup from the DM and confirm it appears in your platform with the expected confirmation and course name.

Choose a simple delivery or an optional sequence

This walkthrough uses One message to deliver the requested link directly. Ask, then send is also available on Free if you want an opening button before the link. Each outgoing DM counts toward your allowance.

On the Creator plan, a sequence can add email capture or an eligible reminder. For comment triggers, the person must tap or reply before another DM can be sent; clicking a website link alone does not count as that reply. Later messages must stay within Instagram’s allowed messaging window. See the Spark setup guide and email capture guide before adding those steps.

Questions

Does a WAITLIST comment add someone to my email list?

No. It requests the link. The person joins through the form and its stated opt-in process.

Can I prepare the Spark before publishing the course teaser?

Yes. A next-post Spark is an option, but only one can wait per account and it expires after twelve hours without a post. Test after it attaches.

Can I set this up on DM Spark Free?

Yes. This setup uses One message, available on Free with 500 messages per calendar month and one connected account. The Creator plan adds custom sequences and email capture, with 25,000 included messages per billing period.

Why did my test not send a DM?

Check that the Spark is Live, Instagram is connected, the keyword is saved, and you have messages remaining. Use a new comment on a selected post from a second account; your own connected account’s comments do not trigger it. Check the Spark’s status for a connection or delivery issue before repeating the test.
