Build your Black Friday gift-guide DM before November
One useful gift guide, one helpful DM, and a plan to keep prices, stock, and delivery details current before the holiday rush.

Quick answer
Make a small gift-guide page, invite people to comment GIFT on one Instagram post, and send that page in one helpful DM. Test the whole journey before November, keep stock and delivery information current, and treat future sale updates as a separate signup. You can run this without offering a discount.
Give gift buyers one useful next step
A customer sees your handmade mugs and thinks of a friend. They want to know which one to choose, what it costs, and whether it will arrive in time. A small gift guide can answer those questions in one place, and a DM can put that guide within reach of the post that caught their attention.
Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026. That gives you about seven weeks from this article's publication to prepare. The date is confirmed in Shopify's 2026 planning guide. The work plan below is our suggestion for a small shop or a creator curating gift recommendations; adapt it to the holidays and buying habits of your audience.
Start with one audience and one promise: “Five gifts for coffee lovers,” “Useful gifts under $40,” or “Locally made gifts available for pickup.” A narrow guide gives you a clear caption and a clear destination. You can decide on any Black Friday offer separately.
Build the page before you write the caption
Choose five to eight items you can describe honestly and keep up to date. Group them by the decision a buyer needs to make: budget, recipient, or occasion. Open the page on your phone and check that each recommendation has:
- A reason to choose itExplain who it suits. “For someone who makes pour-over coffee every morning” is more useful than “the perfect gift.”
- A current price and a direct linkShow the currency. Send the buyer to the relevant product or booking page, and describe what is included in a bundle.
- Availability and fulfillment detailsExplain pickup, dispatch time, delivery regions, or made-to-order lead time. Give a dated order cutoff only when your own fulfillment arrangements support it.
- A fallbackPlan what the page will show if an item sells out: another relevant gift, a real restock option, or a clear unavailable label.
Prefer a page you can edit at the same address. A PDF someone downloaded last week may still show an old price; a maintained page lets that person revisit current information. If you are recommending other businesses' products, check their details and make any affiliate relationship clear alongside the recommendations.
Use a caption and DM that make the same promise
These examples are for a fictional ceramics shop. Replace the products, count, and fulfillment details with your own. Publish the guide before you promise to send it.
Caption
“Buying for a coffee person? We picked five handmade gifts, from a morning mug to a little spoon rest. Comment GIFT and we'll DM you the guide with current prices and dispatch details.”
One-message DM
“Here's our coffee-lover gift guide. You'll find five picks, current prices, and dispatch details on the page. Hope it helps you choose something they'll use.”
Link button: View gift guide
Deliver what the caption promises in that first message. A request for a gift guide is a useful conversation on its own; an email address or a follow does not need to be the price of receiving it.
Set up one post and test it with another account
In DM Spark, use a comment trigger for the selected post or reel, add the keyword GIFT, choose One message, and add the gift-guide link button. If the post is not ready, save an unassigned draft and attach it when the post is published. The comment-to-DM walkthrough covers the setup.
Test with another Instagram account rather than commenting as the shop itself. Check the destination in Instagram's browser and verify the price, product link, and checkout on a phone. If the tester does not follow your account, check Message Requests too: Meta's published Instagram API collection explains that private replies go to the inbox for followers and the Requests folder for people who do not follow.
- Test the promised keywordConfirm GIFT delivers the correct guide. Try a comment without that keyword to check that ordinary conversation does not receive the guide unexpectedly.
- Read the whole journeyThe caption, DM, button label, and page should describe the same resource. Remove a sale claim if the destination does not yet offer it.
- Check the boundariesReview overlapping Sparks, your connection health, and your remaining message allowance before promoting the post.
- Assign a personDecide who will answer gift, delivery, and order questions in the inbox, and who will update the guide when availability changes.
Keep future sale updates separate
Someone requesting a guide in October is not automatically reachable by an Instagram promotion in late November. Meta allows one private reply per comment within seven days. Further messages require the recipient to respond and must be sent within 24 hours of that response. A website link click alone does not create that reply. The limits are described in Meta's Private Replies documentation in its API collection.
If future sale updates are part of your plan, offer a separate signup on the guide page and explain what someone will receive. For example: “Want an email when our Black Friday collection opens? Join the shop updates list.” Make sure your email platform actually records that signup. Sending the guide, collecting an address, and subscribing someone to future emails are separate steps.
You can also publish a new post when the collection opens and invite a fresh request. Keep any Instagram follow-up within the current messaging rules; do not schedule a weeks-later DM to everyone who asked for the October guide.
A small October-to-November work plan
- Now through October 23Pick the audience, curate the gifts, confirm fulfillment details, and write the page. Choose who owns updates.
- Before November 1Publish and test the guide, post the caption, and test the live DM from another account. You can share a useful guide before any sale starts.
- The week before November 27Recheck stock, prices, offer terms, and delivery information. Retest the link and review your message allowance.
- During your campaignCheck the guide and inbox daily. Update unavailable items promptly; pause the Spark if you cannot deliver what the caption promises.
- When the offer endsRemove expired sale copy and update the destination. Keep the guide available if it remains useful, or explain clearly what has changed.
Measure whether people found the guide useful
Write down three separate numbers: people who received the DM, people who clicked its link, and orders your shop can attribute to the campaign. In DM Spark, use the Spark's people reached and link-click information for the first two. Use your store analytics for purchases. A delivered message or a click is not proof of a sale.
Give the guide link a campaign label in your store analytics, and check how that system handles attribution. Alongside the numbers, keep the questions people ask. If several buyers need gift wrapping, a price range, or pickup details, improve the page so the next person gets that answer immediately.
Your first version can be small: one guide, one post, one helpful DM, and a person keeping the promise current. That is enough to learn what gift buyers actually need before the busiest part of your holiday campaign.
Questions
Do I need a Black Friday discount to make a gift guide?
No. A guide can help someone choose by budget, recipient, or use. Show current prices and what makes each gift useful. Only advertise a discount if you have decided its terms and can honor it.
Can I DM everyone who requested the guide when the sale starts?
A comment request does not give you an open-ended Instagram messaging window. Meta allows one private reply to the comment; further automated messages require a response and must stay within the applicable messaging window. Use a separate, clearly explained email signup if someone wants future sale updates.
What should happen when a featured product sells out?
Update the gift-guide page and any caption or message that promises that product. If you cannot keep the promise, pause the automation while you fix it. Use one maintained destination so links already delivered still lead to current information.
