Quick answer

Switch to an Instagram Business or Creator account, connect a tool built on Meta's official Instagram API (DM Spark is one), pick a trigger such as a comment keyword, a story reply, or a keyword in a DM, write the message you want sent, and test it from a second account. Automation can only answer people who reached out first. Instagram doesn't allow cold DMs.

What you need

  • An Instagram Business or Creator account. Personal accounts can't use the messaging API.
  • A tool built on the official API. It connects through Instagram's own login and permission screen.
  • A reason for people to message you. A free guide, a discount code, a product link, or an answer to a common question.

What you can automate

Every Instagram DM automation starts with something the other person does. These are the four triggers DM Spark supports:

  • Keyword comments on a post or reelSomeone comments LINK and gets the link by DM. Comment-to-DM guide
  • Comments on your next postSet the automation up before you publish. It attaches itself to the next post you share.
  • Story repliesAnyone who replies to your story, or replies with a keyword, gets a follow-up. Story reply guide
  • Keywords in DMsSomeone messages PRICE and gets your price list. DM auto reply guide

Set it up in five steps

  1. Switch to a professional account

Instagram only offers messaging automation to Business and Creator accounts. In the Instagram app, go to Settings, then Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account. It's free and doesn't change your followers or posts.

  2. Connect a tool that uses the official API

Sign in to an automation tool and connect Instagram through Instagram's own login screen. You approve specific permissions there. A legitimate tool never asks for your Instagram password.

  3. Choose a trigger

Pick what starts the automation: a keyword comment on a post or reel, a reply to your story, or a DM that contains a keyword.

  4. Write the reply

Write the DM people receive and add your link as a button. Put the thing they asked for first.

  5. Test it, then tell people the keyword

From a second account, comment or send the keyword and check that the DM arrives. Then add a clear call to action to your caption or story, like "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to you."

For a screen-by-screen version, see How to create a Spark.

One message, two, or a sequence

One message sends the reply and your link right away. Start here.

Ask, then send opens with a short message and a button. The link arrives after they tap it. Instagram lets you send one private message in response to a comment, and the conversation opens up once the person answers, so this is how you send more than one message to a commenter.

A sequence adds steps: ask for an email address, wait, send a reminder if they haven't clicked. Sequences are part of the DM Spark Creator plan.

Rules that keep your account safe

  • Never give a tool your Instagram password. Official integrations don't need it.
  • Only reply to people who reached out. Automated cold DMs break Instagram's policies.
  • Send what you promised. If the caption says "comment GUIDE for the guide," the DM should contain the guide, not a sales pitch.
  • Keep links current. Update or pause an automation when an offer ends.

How to choose a tool

Look for a tool that connects through Instagram's login screen, prices by messages sent rather than by contacts, doesn't bill surprise overage, and shows how many people clicked your links.

DM Spark covers those basics. It's built for creators and small businesses, and you can start free with 500 messages a month.

Questions

Is it allowed to automate Instagram DMs?

Yes, if the tool uses Meta's official Instagram API and only replies to people who contacted you first by commenting, replying to a story, or sending a DM. Instagram does not allow unsolicited DMs to people who haven't interacted with you.

Can DM automation get my account banned?

The risk comes from unofficial bots that log in with your password or imitate a person using the app. Tools built on the official API connect through Instagram's permission screen and send messages the way Meta intends. Keep messages relevant to what people asked for and you stay within Instagram's rules.

Can I automate DMs on a personal Instagram account?

No. Meta's messaging API only works with Instagram Business and Creator accounts. Switching is free and takes a minute in Instagram settings.

How much does Instagram DM automation cost?

DM Spark is free for up to 500 messages a month. Creator is $17/month for 25,000 messages, and Creator customers can add 10,000 more for $5 anytime. There are no overage charges.

Does it work on Reels?

Yes. Comment keyword automations work on reels and feed posts the same way.

How fast are automated DMs sent?

Usually within seconds of the comment, story reply, or message. Very large bursts are queued and sent as fast as Instagram's rate limits allow.
